'Leave the area immediately': Heavy police presence at U of Manitoba over reports of 'dangerous male with knife'
Winnipeg police say there is no longer a threat to the community after an extensive search of the University of Manitoba campus.
The university was placed under lockdown for several hours on Tuesday afternoon as police searched for a man who was reported to be armed with a knife. The lockdown was lifted at around 6 p.m. after police were unable to locate the suspect.
In a statement, the university said that the lockdown was lifted after police "conducted a thorough search of the campus and determined that there was no ongoing threat to the community." The university also said that it is "cooperating fully with the police investigation."
The incident began at around 3:30 p.m. when police received a report of a man with a knife on the university campus. The man was described as being in his 20s, with a thin build and short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black pants.
Police immediately responded to the scene and began searching for the suspect. The university was placed under lockdown, and all classes and activities were cancelled.
The lockdown caused some disruption to the university's operations, but there were no reports of any injuries. The university said that it is "committed to the safety of our community" and that it will "continue to work with the police to ensure that the campus is a safe place for everyone."
