'Large police presence’ at University of Manitoba after reports of armed man
Winnipeg police said in a news release that they responded to reports about a man with a gun near the university Friday afternoon just before 3 p.m.
As of 5 p.m., police said they haven’t been able to locate the man and their investigation is ongoing.
The University of Manitoba sent out an emergency alert around 3 p.m., asking students and staff to immediately seek shelter in place.
The alert was lifted about a half hour later, but the university said the campus remains closed for the rest of the day. Classes are cancelled for the remainder of the day.
Winnipeg police said officers are searching the area with the help of the canine unit and air support.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 911.
The university said it will provide updates as they become available.
