IG Metall and VW Group Works Council present a vision for the future: Prospects for all locations without plant closures or mass layoffs
VW Group Works Council Chairman Bernd Osterloh and IG Metall Chairman Jörg Hofmann presented their vision for Volkswagen's future in Wolfsburg today - and thus also a way out of the current crisis that has hit the global automotive industry with full force. The works council and IG Metall are demanding that the switch to electromobility be socially acceptable, protect jobs, and secure all locations. The presentation was preceded by weeks of talks between the two Volkswagen stakeholders and the Group Board of Management.
In addition to the job and location guarantees, the strategy paper "Zukunftspakt" (Future Pact) also includes:
A clear commitment to e-mobility and battery production at all German locations
At Volkswagen's main plant in Wolfsburg, a new Trinity model (previously: Trinity Project) is to be developed and built from 2026 in addition to the ID.3 ID.4 ID.5 models and the SUV Coupé.
Additional investments in the Hanover, Emden, Salzgitter, Kassel, Braunschweig, and Zwickau sites.
The components plants will remain an integral part of the Group and will be integrated into the electric value chain.
The workforce is to be further qualified in the area of e-mobility in order to be prepared for the transformation.
The "Zukunftspakt" also includes a social component: all employees are to receive a stake in the company via a profit-sharing scheme.
"Volkswagen is not closing any factories - we are transforming them," says Bernd Osterloh. "Our goal is to secure the future of Volkswagen and its employees."
IG Metall Chairman Jörg Hofmann adds: "The 'Zukunftspakt' is a good compromise that takes into account the interests of both the employees and the company. We are convinced that this is the right way to secure the future of Volkswagen."
The "Zukunftspakt" will now be discussed with the Volkswagen Group Board of Management. If an agreement is reached, it will be put to a vote by the Volkswagen workforce.
