Manfred Niekisch headed the Frankfurt Zoo for 29 years and significantly shaped its development.

Niekisch died on Thursday at the age of 86. He had been suffering from a serious illness for some time.

Manfred Niekisch was born in Gießen in 1936 and studied veterinary medicine in Hanover. After working as a veterinarian in various zoos, he became director of the Frankfurt Zoo in 1978.

During his tenure, Niekisch oversaw the construction of numerous new enclosures, including the elephant house, the ape house, and the nocturnal animal house. He also played a key role in the development of the zoo's educational and conservation programs.

Niekisch was a passionate advocate for the welfare of animals and a respected figure in the international zoo community.

He will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends, and the many people who visited the Frankfurt Zoo during his long tenure.
