Gold Watch Gifted to Titanic Hero Who Saved 700 Lives Sells for Record £1.5 Million
A gold watch gifted to a Titanic hero who saved 700 lives has sold for a record £1.5 million at auction.
The watch was given to Second Officer Charles Lightoller by the surviving passengers of the Titanic in recognition of his bravery and leadership during the disaster.
Lightoller was the most senior surviving officer on the Titanic and played a key role in the evacuation of passengers and crew. He was responsible for loading lifeboats and ensuring that women and children were given priority.
The watch was sold by Lightoller's family at auction in London on Thursday. It had been expected to fetch around £500,000 but sold for more than three times that amount.
The buyer was an anonymous collector who said he was "delighted" to have acquired the watch. He said it was a "piece of history" and he was "honored" to own it.
Lightoller's watch is one of the most significant Titanic artifacts ever sold at auction. It is a reminder of the heroism and sacrifice of those who served on the Titanic.
