Niekisch was director of Leipzig Zoo for over 20 years
Manfred Niekisch, the former director of Leipzig Zoo, has passed away at the age of 88. Niekisch was born in Leipzig in 1934 and began working at the zoo in 1955. He became director in 1973 and held the position until 1995.
During Niekisch's time as director, Leipzig Zoo underwent a number of changes, including the construction of new enclosures and the introduction of new species. Niekisch was also instrumental in the development of the zoo's educational programs.
After retiring from the zoo, Niekisch continued to work as a consultant and author. He was also a member of the International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens. Niekisch is survived by his wife and two children.
