Community must rally behind new arena at LeBreton or ‘it doesn’t work,’ Bettman tells crowd
Ottawa Senators owner says arena deal needs overwhelming support to move forward
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk says the community needs to rally behind the proposed new arena at LeBreton Flats or the project won't move forward.
Melnyk made the comments at a news conference on Thursday, where he unveiled plans for the new arena. The arena is a key part of the Senators' plan to build a new entertainment district in LeBreton Flats.
Melnyk said the arena deal needs "overwhelming support" from the community in order to move forward. He said he wants to see "a groundswell of support" for the project.
Bettman: 'It doesn't work' without community support
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also spoke at the news conference. He said the arena project is a "transformative" opportunity for Ottawa.
But Bettman also said the project needs community support in order to succeed.
"It doesn't work if the community is not behind it," Bettman said.
Project faces opposition from some residents
The arena project has faced opposition from some residents of LeBreton Flats. Some residents are concerned about the impact the arena will have on their community.
Melnyk said he understands the concerns of residents. He said he is committed to working with the community to address their concerns.
Melnyk: Arena will be a 'catalyst' for LeBreton Flats
Melnyk said the new arena will be a "catalyst" for the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats.
He said the arena will attract new businesses and jobs to the area.
Melnyk also said the arena will be a "world-class" facility that will be a source of pride for Ottawa.
