Bruins Fire Montgomery, Name Sacco Interim Coach
Montgomery Out After Two Seasons
The Boston Bruins have fired head coach Bruce Montgomery after two seasons, the team announced on Monday. Bruce Cassidy was fired by the Bruins in June after six seasons, and Montgomery was hired as his replacement on July 14, 2022.
The Bruins went 30-38-12 under Montgomery this season, finishing in sixth place in the Atlantic Division and missing the playoffs.
Sacco Takes Over on Interim Basis
Assistant coach Joe Sacco has been named the Bruins' interim head coach. Sacco, 56, has been an assistant with the Bruins since 2020. He was previously the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009 to 2013.
The Bruins will begin their search for a permanent head coach immediately.
Montgomery's Tenure Ends Abruptly
Montgomery's tenure in Boston ended abruptly after just two seasons. The Bruins were expected to be a playoff contender this season, but they struggled throughout the year. The team's offense was inconsistent and the defense was porous.
Montgomery's firing is a sign that the Bruins are not satisfied with the direction of the team. The Bruins have not won a playoff series since 2019, and they have not reached the Stanley Cup Final since 2013.
Sacco Faces Uphill Battle
Sacco faces an uphill battle as the Bruins' interim head coach. The Bruins have a lot of problems to fix, and it is unclear if Sacco can turn things around. However, Sacco has a lot of experience, and he is well-respected in the hockey world.
The Bruins will open the 2023-24 season on October 12th against the Washington Capitals.
