Bergen's Commandants Have Resigned
After Board Meeting, Resignations Were Submitted
On March 8, 2023, the Bergen Board of Directors held a meeting to discuss the future of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. At the meeting, the board voted to accept the resignation of Sheriff Anthony Cureton and Undersheriff David Forestello, effective immediately.
The resignations come after a tumultuous year for the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. In January 2023, Cureton was indicted on charges of bribery and corruption. Forestello was also indicted on charges of official misconduct.
In a statement, the Bergen County Board of Directors said that it "regrets the need for this action, but believes it is in the best interests of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office and the community it serves."
The board has appointed Undersheriff Michael Saudino to serve as interim sheriff. Saudino has been with the Bergen County Sheriff's Office for over 20 years and has served as undersheriff since 2018.
The board has also appointed a search committee to find a permanent replacement for Cureton. The search committee is expected to report back to the board within 90 days.
The resignations of Cureton and Forestello are a major development in the ongoing saga of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. It remains to be seen how the office will move forward under new leadership.
