Feds must address issues raised by COVID to ensure Throne Speech has teeth, says NDP critic

NDP health critic Ryan Meili said with the Throne Speech just two weeks away, the federal government needs to address the issues raised by the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure the upcoming agenda has teeth.

Throne Speech must answer pandemic questions

Meili said the pandemic has laid bare gaps in Canada's health-care system. He wants to see targeted measures for vulnerable populations, such as seniors, Indigenous people, and those living with disabilities.

The throne speech is an important opportunity for the government to outline its priorities for the upcoming year. Meili said he hopes the speech will include concrete commitments to addressing the challenges facing Canadians.

The throne speech is scheduled to be delivered on Sept. 23. It will be the first throne speech since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Federal partners should help Sask. address physician shortage: Meili

Meili said the province is facing a shortage of physicians and is looking to the federal government for support.

Meili said Saskatchewan has the lowest number of physicians per capita in Canada, and the problem is only getting worse.

“We need the federal government to step up and help us address this issue,” Meili said. “We need more doctors in Saskatchewan, and we need them now.”
