Michael Strahan, who grew up on an Army base and whose father was in the military, honored veterans at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s Salute to Freedom Gala on Thursday, a day after he was criticized for his comments about the national anthem.
Strahan, who was a guest speaker at the event, talked about the importance of honoring veterans and their families.
“I’m an Army brat,” Strahan said. “I grew up on an Army base. My father was in the military. I know what it’s like to have a loved one deployed overseas. I know what it’s like to worry about them every day.”
Strahan’s comments came a day after he was criticized for saying that he didn’t think the national anthem should be played before sporting events. Strahan made the comments during an appearance on “Good Morning America.”
“I think it’s a little bit unnecessary,” Strahan said. “I think we can do without it.”
Strahan’s comments sparked a backlash on social media, with many people accusing him of being unpatriotic. Strahan later apologized for his comments, saying that he didn’t mean to offend anyone.
In his speech at the Salute to Freedom Gala, Strahan said that he has a lot of respect for veterans and their families.
“I know what you’ve been through,” Strahan said. “I know what you’ve sacrificed. And I’m grateful for your service.”
Strahan’s comments were met with applause from the audience.
