A Gold Pocket Watch Given to the Captain Who Rescued Titanic Survivors Sells for Record Price
The watch was given to Captain Arthur Henry Rostron of the RMS Carpathia.
A gold pocket watch given to the captain who rescued survivors of the Titanic has sold for a record price at auction.
The watch was given to Captain Arthur Henry Rostron of the RMS Carpathia, which rescued over 700 survivors of the Titanic after it struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912.
The watch was sold at auction for £150,000 ($192,000).
The watch was sold at auction by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, England, for £150,000 ($192,000), more than double its pre-sale estimate.
The watch is made of 18-carat gold and has a white enamel face with black Roman numerals and hands.
It is inscribed on the back with the words "Presented to Captain A.H. Rostron by the White Star Line in recognition of his services in rescuing the survivors of the Titanic, April 15th, 1912."
The watch was sold with a letter from Rostron's daughter, which confirmed that the watch was given to her father by the White Star Line.
The letter also stated that the watch was "always treasured" by Rostron and was "one of his most prized possessions."
Rostron was born in England in 1860 and joined the White Star Line in 1887.
He was appointed captain of the RMS Carpathia in 1908 and was responsible for rescuing the survivors of the Titanic in 1912.
Rostron died in 1940 at the age of 80.
The watch is now owned by a private collector.
